‘Fire and rain’ – een drieluik over verlies

De Amerikaanse artiest James Taylor(1948), ook bekend van het lied ‘You’ve got a friend’, beschrijft in het lied ‘Fire and rain’ emoties die bij veel mensen in rouw herkenning oproepen. ‘Won’t you look down upon me, jesus… You’ve just got to see me through another day’ / Zie mij, Jezus… Helpt u mij om weer een andere dag door te komen.

De teksten komen vanuit zijn persoonlijke ervaring. Taylor legt in 2005 in een interview aan host Scott Simon uit dat het lied eigenlijk uit drie delen bestaat:

1. Het eerste couplet is een reactie op de zelfdoding van een goede vriendin van vroeger, Suzanne Schnerr.
2. In het tweede couplet beschrijft hij zijn worsteling met drugsverslaving en depressie.
3. In het derde couplet blikt hij terug op zijn weg naar beroemdheid en hoe hij dit heeft ervaren. Daarin noemt hij ook het verdriet om het mislukken van een band waar hij eerder onderdeel van was, ‘James Taylor and the Flying Machine’.

James Taylor is de vader van Ben Taylor, van wie we het ontroerende lied ‘Digest’ kennen.
