Ed Sheeran’s ‘Visiting Hours’ gaat over overleden vriend | Song
Hoe mooi zou het zijn als de hemel, of het hiernamaals, bezoekuren had. Even langsgaan bij diegene die je zo mist. Voor een knuffel, advies of om te vertellen wat er gaande is, hier op aarde. Ed Sheeran schreef hierover in zijn nummer ‘Visiting Hours’.
Ed Sheeran maakte het lied na het overlijden van zijn zeer goede vriend en bekende Australische producer, Michael Gudinski. De eerste uitvoering ervan was op Gudinski’s herdenkingsdienst.
Tornado
‘Michael was een tornado van vreugde’, schrijf de zanger op zijn Instagram account. ‘Als hij een kamer binnenliep, wist je direct dat hij er was. Je voelde dat iedereen in de ruimte enthousiast werd door zijn aanwezig. Hij gaf je het gevoel dat je de belangrijkste persoon op aarde was.’

De twee waren jarenlang bevriend, tourden samen en deelden familievakanties waar tot in de late uurtjes werd gesproken over van alles. Het bijzondere karakter van de producer komt sterk naar voren wanneer Ed Sheeran vertelt over hun relatie.
Bronzen standbeeld
‘Aan het einde van onze laatste tour, vroeg hij me wat ik wilde als afscheidscadeau’. Gekscherend antwoordde de zanger: ‘Een levensgroot bronzen standbeeld van jou, dan kan ik altijd samen met je drinken bij mij thuis.’ Een jaar later kwam dat standbeeld daadwerkelijk aan en hebben ze er samen nog een biertje mee gedronken (de foto’s kun je zijn op Ed Sheeran’s instagram account).
Sheeran ziet Gudinski daarom in eerste instantie als vriend. ‘Maar ook als vaderfiguur en mentor’. Vooral dat laatste, zijn mentorschap, komt terug in zijn nummer Visiting Hours. In het breekbare lied zingt Ed Sheeran dat hij zo graag nog om advies wil vragen en wil vertellen hoe bang hij soms is om te falen.
Een prachtig lied, ongetwijfeld herkenbaar voor iedereen die een dierbaar iemand is verloren. Want hoe mooi zou het zijn, als we onze overleden dierbaren nog af en toe konden bezoeken.
